In Austria, the duration of child support is not tied to any specific age limit. In principle, parents must pay child support until the child’s ability to be self-supporting. This means that children who have already reached the age of majority can also be entitled to child support. For example, a university degree usually prevents the child from becoming self-supporting. Of course, the child must study seriously and purposefully.
In general, it will be reasonable to assume that a child is capable of self-support after completing his or her vocational training or schooling.
If the adult child marries, the parents’ obligation to pay maintenance also ends. The child then has a claim to maintenance from the spouse.
