FAQ

What happens if I appear without defense counsel despite being required to have a lawyer?

In this case, you will be requested by the court to appoint a defense counsel. If you do not comply with this request, you will be assigned a public defender or, if the requirements for legal aid are met, a legal aid defender. The appointment of the public defender or the legal aid defender is then made by the locally competent bar association.

In contrast to the public defender, the legal aid defender does not have to be paid by the accused.
