FAQ

What are the rights and duties of lay judges?

If selected, lay judges are summoned by the Court via registered letter not later than 14 days prior to the commencement of the hearing.

Lay judges must fulfill their duty in court on the respective hearing days. An unjustified absence may be sanctioned with an administrative fine of up to EUR 1,000.00. If costs are incurred as a result of the absence, the costs shall be reimbursed. In case of an unavoidable event (e.g. accident, illness) such consequences are not incurred. However, working hours do not constitute an unavoidable event.

Jurors and lay assessors are also entitled to reimbursement of travel and accommodation expenses and compensation for time missed.
