FAQ

What happens in the main proceedings?

If charges are brought after the conclusion of the investigation stage, the main proceedings begin. The central component of the main proceedings is the (public) main hearing, in which both the defendant and witnesses and experts are heard as part of the evidentiary proceedings. The main proceedings usually conclude with a verdict, which may be a conviction or an acquittal. Under certain circumstances, the main proceedings can also be settled by diversion (see later).
