Each parent can apply for the transfer of sole custody or his or her participation in custody, whereupon the existing custody is changed by the court. The application must be granted if the change is in the best interests of the child. In the course of the modification proceedings, one parent is usually assigned the main care of the child and the other is granted a right of contact.
