How long may I be detained?

The detention may last for a total of four days. After that, the person concerned shall be released or remanded in custody. The four days result from the fact that the time limit for admission to the prison is 48 hours from the time of arrest, and subsequently the court has 48 hours to decide how to proceed.

If pre-trial detention is imposed, longer stays in custody may result, as pretrial detention itself provides for longer periods (see below).
